First JSM Radio International Summer Jazz Workshop offers a master class on the study of jazz improvisation: “creating the new from the old”. Join us for an opportunity to learn style reinvention and self-expression in Jazz music from guitarist Bora Celiker and drummer Benjamin Sanz.
Course Overview: The lectures of this year will focus on the theme “Jazz Improvisation Techniques & Inspiration”. Master class is collaborative and leaves participants with a deeper understanding of Jazz rhythms using practical exercises and personal methodologies of our tutors.
Beside daily performance exercise, topics include in-depth look into the jazz theory, improvisation and rhythm for the intermediate to advanced students. Intensive workshops lasting 3 days comprise of each day’s sessions lasting 5 hours in the morning (10:00 – 12:00) and in the afternoon (17:00 – 20:00). Depends of the international participants, the language of lectures will be English and/or French.
Tutors / Artists
Born in 1977 (İstanbul), Bora Çeliker started playing the guitar after elementary school. Throughout his college study he was confronted with a very popular blues band who was improvised by the genres in stylistic traditions. Taking a hint from the masters such as T-bone Walker and BB King, he turned his attention towards jazz musicians like Lester Young, Johnny Hodges and Charlie Christian. He enjoys playing (and singing if the occasion calls for it) standard tunes as well as original material. He also takes part in free improvisation ensembles and has collaborated with experimental visual artists. He has played with important artists such as Ateş Tezer, Burak Bedikyan, İmer Demirer, Matt Hall, Volkan Hürsever, Cem Aksel, Deniz Dündar, Barış Ertürk, Erdal Akyol, KağanYıldız, Ferit Odman, Kestutis Vaiginis, Mark Alban Lotz, Selim Selçuk, Ricky Ford. His debut album "Borabook", accompanied by Burak Bedikyan (piano), Eric Revis (bass), Ted Poor (drums), and İmer Demirer (trumpet) was released in December 2012 (For more information see www.boraceliker.com).
Benjamin Sanz is a drummer and composer. He has initiated several projects inhabited by jazz and African roots music including Benjamin Sanz Quintet. He organized and led for seven years a "Jam Session" of jazz and world music to the Miroiterie (Ménilmontant, Paris), music meeting point and exchange of knowledge, supported by the presence of great musicians such as David Murray, Bobby Few, Ernest Dawkins, Sabir Matteen, Jaribu Shahid ... Getting There intersect musicians of this movement the "great black music" as well as around the world. Turned to creativity and improvisation, his polyrhythmic play causes the exchange favors a strong pulse and cohesion of the overall sound. Formed in contact with great musicians and his travels, he plays in 1st JSM Radio International Summer Jazz Workshop, 2013 Europe, Africa and the United States with musicians such as David Murray (David Murray and the Gwo Ka Masters), Byard Lancaster, Fantazio, Roy Campbell, Lobi Traore, Safiata Conde Aida Kahnn, Oliver Lake, the Romanian singer Norig the hip hop group jazz US Iswhat? Course Location
Masterclass will take place in the lecture rooms provided by the non-profit organization Gümüşlük Academy located in Gümüşlük, Bodrum, Turkey (www.gumuslukakademisi.org).
Gümüslük Academy is located 50 min from Milas-Bodrum International Airport, BJV. From the Academy, participants have access to the surrounding bars and beach. Gümüşlük center is 8 minute from Academy by minibus.
Housing/ Meals
Participants may stay in private or shared rooms with one or two roommates in Gümüşlük Academy residence. Bed and breakfast fee 30 € for private room, 38 € for double room (http://www.gumuslukakademisi.org/?id=5).
Cost
The participation fee is 85 €. There is no application fee. Housing and meal are not included in the participation fee. Airfare is not included in the participation fee. Participants are responsible for arranging and purchasing their own airfare and transfer from airport to Gümüşlük Academy.

The program is intended for all musicians from all age groups. If you would like to be considered for the masterclass, you must do the following:

International Participants: Please consider that most of the EU nationalities do not need a visa for three months residence in Turkey.
