Karl Berger's Stone Workshop Orchestra Final Performances in 2011

For the last eight months Karl Berger’s Stone Workshop Orchestra has played every Monday at the Stone and will do so for the next three Mondays, Nov 21, 28 and Dec 5. Conducted by Karl Berger in his inimitable style, developed over many years at the legendary Creative Music Studio (www.creativemusicstudio.org), the 18+ piece orchestra turns improvisational ideas developed in the 7:15pm rehearsal/workshop, into a fully formed 9:00pm performance!

Karl’s “Music Mind” concept introduces a new approach and experience of harmonizing improvised sound for orchestral explorations of original themes or melodies from the inexhaustible bounty of the world’s folk traditions as well as lines written by the likes of Don Cherry or Ornette Coleman. The list of professional participants includes: Frederika Krier, David Bakridges (violin), Sylvain Leroux (flutes), Yukuri (alto flute), Ken Ya Kawaguchi (Shakuhachi), David Sherr (clarinet) Michael Lytle, bass clarinet, Afram Fever (soprano sax), Mercedes Figueras, David Schnug (alto sax), Stephen Gauci, Yuri Kretzmer, Darryl Foster (tenor sax), Thomas Heberer, Herb Robertson, Brian Groder (trumpet), Steve Swell (trombone), Harvey Valdes, Kenny Wessel(guitar), Hilliard Greene, David Perrott, Adam Lane, Ken Filiano, Michael Bisio (bass), John Pietaro, percussions, Lou Grassi, Harris Eisenstadt (drums), Philip Foster (odds and ends), Mossa Bildner (vocals). One of the trademarks of Karl Berger’s Stone Workshop Orchestra is Ingrid Sertso’s uncanny vocalization and poetry. Guest soloists from the UK, Spain, France, Germany, Israel, Finland, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa joined the orchestra in past weeks.

On November 21 and 28 Karl Berger’s Stone Workshop Orchestra will meet again at 7:15 (Rehearsal/Performance, open to the public), and 9 PM (performance).

On December 5 there will be two performance sets at 8 PM and 10 PM, with guest soloists, including John Zorn, saxophone.

The Stone is located at the corner of Avenue C and E 2nd Street.

Tickets are $20 ($10 for students, seniors, musicians, Stone regulars and CMS supporters). All proceeds support the CMS Archive Project, the preservation and re-mastering of over 400 historic CMS recordings by some of the finest innovators in music, in collaboration with Columbia University.
